Enable or Disable Cookies in Chrome Browser
Cookies are small files containing information that websites store on your device, whenever you visit these websites using Chrome or any other web browser on your Computer, Phone or Tablet.
In general, cookies are designed to store browsing information, site preferences and other details on your computer.
This information is then used by the websites to serve you with relevant content and Ads.
Like most web browsers, Google Chrome provides various options to manage cookies, including the option to automatically clear cookies when you quit Chrome browser.
1. Enable Cookies in Chrome Browser
If you had previously blocked cookies in Chrome, you can follow the steps below to enable cookies for all websites on your computer.
1. Open Chrome browser > click on 3 dots icon and select Settings option in the drop-down menu.
2. On Chrome Settings screen, scroll down and click on Site Settings option, located under ‘Privacy and Security’ section.
3. On the next screen, click on Cookies and Site Data option, located under ‘Permissions’.
4. On ‘Cookies and site data’ screen, move the toggle next to Allow Site to save and read cookie data to ON position.
This default option in Chrome allows all websites to store cookies on your computer and use cookies to serve relevant content.
2. Disable Cookies in Chrome Browser
Follow the steps below to disable cookies for all websites in Chrome browser on your computer.
1. Open Chrome browser, click on 3-dots icon and select Settings option in the drop-down menu.
2. On the next screen, scroll down and click on Site Settings option, located in ‘Privacy and security’ section.
3. On Site Settings screen, click on Cookies and Site Data option, located under ‘Permissions’ section.
4. On the next screen, move the toggle next to Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended) to OFF position.
Note: Disabling cookies in Chrome browser may prevent you from using the full functionality of certain websites.
3. Enable Cookies for Specific Websites in Chrome
Another option is to enable cookies for specific websites, while disabling cookies for all other websites.
1. Open Chrome browser > click on 3-dots Menu Icon > Settings > Site Settings.
2. On Site Settings screen, click on Cookies and Site Data option, located under ‘Permissions’ section.
3. On the next screen, disable Allow sites to save data and read cookie data option and click on the Add button, located next to ‘Allow’.
4. On the pop-up, enter the website address that you want to Allow and click on the Add button.
After this setting only the Allowed website will be able to store cookies on your computer.
4. Disable Cookies for Specific Websites in Chrome
Instead of disabling cookies for all websites, it is possible to disable cookies for specific websites on your computer.
1. Open Chrome browser > click on 3-dots Menu Icon > Settings > Site Settings.
2. On Site Settings screen, click on Cookies and Site Data option, located under ‘Permissions’ section.
3. On the next screen, click enable Allow sites to save and read cookie data option and click on the Add option located next to Block.
4. On the pop-up, enter the website address that you want to block and click on the Add button.
The blocked website will no longer be able to store cookies on your computer.
Note: You can block all versions (www, non www) and subdomains of websites by using the ‘*‘ Wildcard (*.example.com).
5. Automatically Clear Cookies on Exit in Chrome browser
This option allows cookies while you are visiting the websites and automatically clears the cookies when you quit Chrome browser.
1. Open Chrome browser > click on 3-dots Menu Icon > Settings > Site Settings.
2. On Site Settings screen, click on Cookies and Site Data option, located under ‘Permissions’ section.
3. On the next screen, enable Allow sites to save and read cookie data and Clear cookies and site data when you quit Chrome options.
This will make Chrome browser to automatically clear Cookies when you exit Chrome browser.
6. Block Third Party Cookies in Chrome
Another option is to block only the Third-party cookies on your computer, while allowing the websites that you visit to store cookies on your computer.
First-party Cookies are created by the websites that you visit, while third-party cookies are created by other websites hosting images and advertisements on that website.
1. Open Chrome browser > click on 3-dots Menu Icon > Settings > Site Settings.
2. On Site Settings screen, click on Cookies and Site Data option, located under ‘Permissions’ section.
3. On the next screen, enable Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended) and Block third-party cookies options.
While this option may decrease the amount of tracking performed by third parties, it does not prevent websites from serving advertisements.
