Where Can I Find Mercury

Mercury is a chemical element with the symbol Hg and atomic number 80. It is commonly known as quicksilver and was formerly named hydrargyrum (/haɪˈdrɑːrdʒərəm/). A heavy, silvery d-block element, mercury is the only metallic element that is liquid at standard conditions for temperature and pressure; the only other element that is liquid under these conditions is bromine, though metals such as caesium, gallium, and rubidium melt just above room temperature.

Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world mostly as cinnabar (mercuric sulfide). The red pigment vermilion is obtained by grinding natural cinnabar or synthetic mercuric sulfide. Mercury forms alloys with many other elements: these alloys are called amalgams.

Mercury dissolves many metals such as gold and silver to form amalgams. Mercury plays a key role in the production of chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide from salt brine. Elemental mercury has three stable isotopes: 197Hg, 195Hg, and 202Hg.

Two radioisotopes have also been discovered: 198Hg (half-life 44 years) decays into platinum while 203Hg (half-life 46 years) decays into thallium. Nearly all of the remaining radioactive isotopes have half-lives less than an hour except 199Hg with a half-life of 3 days and 200Hg with a half-life of 46 days. The most common naturally occurring isotope of mercury is 196mercury which makes up about 0.15% of all mercury found on Earth.

Most other mercury isotopes have very short half lives making them rare or non existent in nature due to their rapid decay into other elements orradioactive decay leaving no traces behind except for those few long lived radioisotopes like 199 Hg which can be found decaying very slowly into lead over extremely long periods of time (billions or even trillions of years).

It is Commonly Found in Lava

The element lava is found in numerous volcanic rocks, but most commonly in basalt and granite. Lava is also a major component of the Earth’s mantle, and is present in many other planetary bodies in our solar system, including Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Saturn’s moon Io. Lava is formed when magma (molten rock) erupts from a volcano or fissure in the earth’s surface.

The molten rock then cools and solidifies, forming lava.
